Isle of Man Men's Golf Squad report from the Hesketh Henriques Trophy

The Men's golf squad had six players compete in the Hesketh Henriques Trophy held at Hesketh Golf Club in Southport at the weekend, this is the third trip as part of Captain Kevin Moore's perperations for the Northern Counties in August. The weather was looking good and with some modifications being made to the course the now par 69 layout would still provide a stern test to all players teeing off in the 36 hole shotgun start competition.

Jon Corke lead the Manx contingent in round 1 with a score of 74 two shots better than Daryl Callister who scored a 76. Having never played the course before Liam Cowin's 76 to match Daryl was a good platform to build on in round 2 and with the other Island players not far behind Tom Harris (77), Jamie Arniel (77) and Peter Glover (79) everyone would be looking to better their first round scores and move up the field.

CSS for round 1 was 72 and the leading round 1 score of 67 by Greenmount golfer Matt Collinge gave hope to the players of a good score being possible.

Peter Glover learnt the course quickly and posted a second round score of 72 to go with his morning round 79 (151), this would be matched by Castletown golf Tom Harris who's better first round score of 77 left him on a 149 total which was good enough for 10th place on the day and the leading squad player.

Tom Harris 149 total was good enough for 10th place on the day.

It is always your first aim in the second round to beat your first round score, you know the pins, speed of the greens and wind direction so in theory you have an advantage. However golf is a strange game and this isn't always possible, Jon Corke didn't quite manage this feat adding a 76 to his morning round to finish on 150 (second of the Manxies) and not quite beating his first round score Jamie Arneil posted a second round 77 to match his first round leaving him on 154.

Daryl Callister who was carrying a wrist injury managed to add a second round score of 77 to finish on 153 and ex footballer Liam Cowin who is also returning from injury managed to complete the full distance adding a 79 second round score to finish on 155. Round 1 leader Matt Collinge manage to add a second round 70 to his first round lead and won the event by 5 clear shots from home player Bryan Hughes.

Captain Kevin Moore was happy with the consistency of all six squad players with only six shots covering their 36 hole scores. It is imperative that the squad compete in these type of off island events leading up to the Norther Counties team event in August when all six player scores count towards a team total. The next squad trip is scheduled for 30th June at Wilpshere GC, if anyone would be interested in sponsoring future trips for our squad players please contact Kevin who would greatly appreciate any help available.
