Annual General Meeting of IOMG

The AGM of Isle of Man Golf (IOMG) took place at Peel GC Clubhouse on Thursday 22nd March and was attended by the President, the Board of Directors, Officers, Past Presidents, Voting Members and Members of the Island’s golf clubs.  The Chairman, Terry Groves, thanked all the hard-working Voting Representatives, IOMG Officers, the President (Dee Lewis), the Secretary (Gary Jakeman) and the Finance Director (Steve Keegan).

The President reported that she had lots of exciting highs and a few challenges during her year, with highlights including the buzz of success at the Island games, the Island Championship at Ramsey and especially the energy and enthusiasm around the junior tournaments.  She again acknowledged all the hard work of Officials including the Competitions Administrators, County Captains, Robbie Radcliffe (handicaps and rules), Richard Power (safeguarding), the Course Rating team (led by Neil Kinrade) and Mel Jansen (Club’s Support Officer).  She had enjoyed her year and thanked all clubs for their hospitality.

Roy Clague (Castletown GC) was then installed as IOMG President for 2018-19, receiving his chain of office and medal from the retiring President.  He thanked Dee for her hard work and enthusiasm and presented her with her Past President’s Medal and flowers.

Roy acknowledged the honour bestowed on him in being invited to be President and hoped that he could fulfil the expectations of the role.  He thanked all dedicated club committee members for giving their time and energy in ensuring the proper functioning of their clubs and competitions.  He would be writing to their committees to ask how he could best assist them.

The Secretary’s report highlighted the many successes of the year in tournaments, thanking the organisers and all the sponsors.  He especially thanked Mel Jansen (Club Support Officer) who has worked tirelessly to introduce new players of all ages and ability to the Game of Golf and should be commended.  Geoff Skillicorn had resigned during the year and his expertise and enthusiasm is sadly missed by all on the Board & Executive.   England Golf will be introducing new rules on the 1st January 2019 and the World Wide Handicapping System will come into effect on the 1st January 2020.   Gemma Hunter from England Golf will be making a presentation on the new World Wide Handicapping System (WHS) at Peel Golf Club 14th June at 6.00pm.

Steve Keegan gave his final financial report.  He thanked Andrew Gerrard from Harding-Lewis Ltd for the professional and timely examination of the accounts.  He clarified aspects of the presentation of the accounting figures for those present.  He commented on EG affiliation fees which may well have a small rise next year and may be collected directly by England Golf. He thanked those that had helped him during the last four years, especially Gary. He emphasised that a new Financial Director was essential, otherwise this role may need to become a funded post, reducing the funds available for promoting golf.  The Accounts were adopted and unanimously approved.

The election of Niall Keenan (Mount Murray GC) as President Elect was unanimously approved by all present.  The election of all other Officers was taken en bloc and again unanimously approved.  It was noted that there are 3 vacant Directors positions on the Board following retirements, and Voting Representatives were asked to urgently go back to their clubs to try and seek nominations, especially from those clubs currently without representation at this level.

Under any other business, Gail Corrin (Club and Member Services) advised that all clubs need to have their courses rated by the end of Summer 2019 and should make the necessary arrangements as soon as possible. She also asked members to go back to their club committees and find a date when IOMG could visit to discuss Golf Development at their club. This will assist IOMG in the formulation of an island wide strategic plan for our sport.

After the closure of the AGM, the President thanked the retiring Directors of IOMG (Steve Keegan, Terry Groves and Dee Lewis) and presented them each with gifts on behalf of IOMG.
