WELCOME TO ISLE OF MAN GOLF
Following the Senior Qualifying (6-a-side) at Delamere Forest a number of our senior players traveled to Southport to play in the 36 hole Dr David Marsh Senior open at Southport and Ainsdale golf club. This competition attract many of the top players from the north of England and further afield.
A practice round was played on Wednesday 5th September which showed the course to be excellent order with the greens in possibly the best condition I have ever seen them, running fast and true.
On arrival at the course for the first round on Thursday 6th we were greeted with heavy rain and a fresh breeze, this restricted practice to a minimum, but by the time our first player went out the rain had eased but the wind remained fresh.
Jeff Ward continued his excellent form from Delamere Forest producing a fine score of 76 gross 71 net.
Keith Ward came in with 77 gross 74 net followed by Andrew Horne on 78 gross 72 net. This left all three players well in contention going into the second round.
Geoff Skillicorn was a respectable gross 82 followed by Roy Norman and John McMullan a little bit further back.
The following day the weather was a little better but the wind was blowing across the course and had increased quite considerably.
None of this could stop Jeff Ward from improving on his first round score, Jeff came in with a best gross score of the day 73 (net 68) So, along with his first round score of 76 this placed him firmly at the top of the leader board for a large part of the day, only being bettered towards the end of play.
Geoff and Keith finished in the mid 80s with Roy, Andrew and John once again a little further back.
At the end of play Jeff Ward had finished 1st overall in the net section with a total score of 139, And 3rd overall in the gross section with a final total off 145. This was a fantastic result for Jeff and for Senior Island golf.
At the presentation Jeff received his trophy from Dr David Marsh and then went on to praise the condition of the course and to thank Southport and Ainsdale golf club, the staff and Dr David Marsh for their kind hospitality.
Senior Island captain.
