WELCOME TO ISLE OF MAN GOLF
The Isle of Man Senior golf team recently traveled to Delamere Forest golf club in Cheshire to compete in the Northern Seniors Qualifying competition (6-A-Side). The team consisted of: Keith Ward, Jeff Ward, Dave Dancox, Julian Sutton, Geoff Skillicorn and Andrew Horne.
Delamere is a fairly undulating par 72 heathland course measuring 6,300 yards. The competition took place on Tuesday 4th September and was played over 36 holes. The golf course was in good condition, but with rain in the morning it was likely to make playing conditions quite difficult.
First man out was Keith Ward who covered the front nine in one over par. After a poor start to the back 9 he still managed to complete the round on 6 over 78.
Jeff Ward was the second man out. Jeff who has been playing well recently completed the front nine in a very impressive level par, he then went on to complete his round on a very competitive 3 over par 75.
Dave Dancox was the third man out. Unfortunately as we all know can happen Dave struggled a bit on and around the greens and unfortunately finished with 88.
Forth man out was Julian Sutton. Julian had a hole in “one” on the par three 6th hole and went on to completed the front nine in 1 over par. With a few dropped shots on the back nine Julian finished with a very competitive score of 5 over 77.
Geoff Skillicorn was the next man out. Geoff who is on fine form at the moment completed the front 9 in a brilliant one under par. With a couple off dropped shots on the back 9 Geoff went on to complete his round in a superb 1 over par 73.
Last man out was Andrew Horne. Andrew played well to completed the front 9 in a respectable 4 over par, but with a few bad bounces and missed putts Andrew completed his round in 82.
At the end of the morning play and with just 5 scores to count from the 6 played the team was well placed for a good finish.
After lunch the second round got underway. With conditions very slightly improving we all had high hopes of improving on our first round scores.
That certainly was the case for Keith Ward who managed to better his first round score of 78 with a fine 3 over par 75, leaving him on a total of 153.
Jeff Ward was only 2 shots down on his morning round, finishing with 77 giving him a final total of 152. Another fine performance from Jeff.
Dave Dancox improved on his second round but could still not master the greens and finished on 85 for a total of 173.
Julian Sutton unfortunately had a few wayward drives in the afternoon round but battled on to complete his round in 82 which left him with a respectable total of 159.
Geoff Skillicorn after his impressive 73 in the morning was going really well in the afternoon until he had a few bunker problems on the par four 8th hole which resulted in a 9, unfortunately for Jeff that one hole cost him a round of 82 and a final total of 155.
Andrew Horne struggled a bit with his chipping and putting in the afternoon but worked hard to finish on 84 and a final 36 hole total of 166.
The winner County was Lancashire. With a combined handicaps of ‘scratch’ they finished with a grand total of 741. With the Isle of Man’s total team handicap off 27 it was always going to be difficult to compete with the bigger Countries, that said we did finish forth out of seven in the net count back. It was a terrific performance from all the team and we all look forward to competing again next year at Garforth in Yorkshire on 2nd and 3rd September 2019.
