Seniors on Tour!

The Isle of Man Senior Team travelled to Northumberland recently to compete in the Seniors County Qualifying Championship which was played at Arcot Hall Golf Club on Tuesday 5th of September. The team are pictured below, left-to-right Jeff Ward, Roy Norman (reserve), John McMullan (Captain), Andrew Horne, Mark Pugh, Geoff Skillicorn and Keith Ward.

Tuesday morning saw very heavy rain and fresh winds blowing across the 6,350 yard par 70 course. The fairways were under water in places, but the greens remained in excellent condition throughout the day.

Conditions were always going to make scoring difficult as the 36 holes were being played in one day, however, Keith Ward was our first man out and returned an excellent score of 76. Improving on that, Mark Pugh came in with 73 which left him well in the hunt for the individual prizes.  Geoff Skillicorn shot 81 and last man out, Jeff Ward, came in with a really good score of 78, followed by the remainder of the team in the mid 80s.

The rain finally stopped during the afternoon but, by this time, the fairways were holding a considerable amount of water. The second round saw Keith returning a brilliant 74 followed by Mark on 76 and Geoff on 79. The rest of the team again had scores in the mid 80s.

CSS for the day was 72 and 71 and, whilst the leaders after the first round were Lancashire on 366,  the eventual winners were Yorkshire, who pulled back a deficit of 15 shots to win with a total score of 738. The Isle of Man team finished 7th on 790.

The team then headed south to Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club to play in the 36-hole Dr David Marsh Senior open with 18 holes to be played each day on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th September.

S&A was in excellent condition with the greens running fast and true and the weather was quite good, although the wind was considerably stronger on the second day.

Both Keith and Mark once again performed very well. Keith finishing overall joint 8th with scores of 77+77 (154). Mark was joint 10th with scores of 76+80 (156).

Jeff returned excellent scores of 77+85 (162) and Geoff shot a great 79 on the first day but, with the strengthening wind on the second day, both finished mid-table along with John, Roy and Andrew. The winning score was 147.

The golf was all taken seriously with early nights and plenty of practice with a good time enjoyed by all after the competitions were finished. There was even time for a 'selfie'!

The 2018 Senior Counties will be played in Cheshire at Delamere Forest Golf Course on 4th September so, if anyone is interested in joining the Senior Men’s Squad, please contact John McMullan on 451004.
